How a Documentary Changed My Life

How a Documentary Changed My Life - Toward Greater Things - Learn how a documentary watched years ago leads to a major life change.

I have had this tradition of Documentary Sunday for a few years now.  It’s pretty self-explanatory:  I try to watch at least one documentary every Sunday.  It started after I graduated college and I realized that I wasn’t learning about the world the same way I was before.  I love learning and wanted to have more of it in my life so Documentary Sunday was born! She Remembered Quote

Since I have been doing this for a while now, the names and specifics don’t always stick out the way they used to but the impact of various documentaries have always stuck with me.  The best example I have came from a documentary that I watched right at the beginning of my tradition.  This film was walking through the life of an artist and one of the aspects they highlighted was that he would go into his studio from 9-5 every day and paint.  Art was his livelihood and the way that he made it work for him was to focus a large amount of time each day on it.

I remember this feeling that came over me when I heard that he spent at least eight hours a day doing the thing he loved most.  I day dreamed about what it would be like to paint like that instead of go to the office job I had at the time.  I swear, my soul did a happy dance!

Now painting isn’t necessarily what I want to spend all my time on, but the feeling stuck with me.  It crossed my mind almost daily for years.  It started as a whisper, then it turned into a hope, and eventually worked it’s way to being one of the loudest thoughts I had.  The idea of spending all my time doing something that was really me and that truly gave me joy was so tempting, especially as I grew more comfortable and content in my job.

Pursue imageThis documentary wore me down.  The thought it put into my mind took over until I decided to make the jump and left my job to start my own company.  Everything in my life feels different now.  While it has been a ride to get to this point, I am finding more and more confidence in who I am and what I am capable of.  Leaving my job to pursue my passions has been the best choice I have ever made.

Here’s something I learned along the way:  In the world we live in today, there are an abundance of possibilities and paths that can be taken to find success and live out passion.  I did not realize how small of a world I had created in my mind by only thinking and knowing the corporate world.  It was the only path I saw for a long time.  Either I was working with this company or that one.  There was never a thought that I could build something all on my own.

After I worked up the courage to take the jump, my world expanded very quickly.  I started to see the possibilities and I was blown away at how much was out there.  I am so excited to be on this journey with all of you – building a community of people who use their gifts and talents to make the world a better place.  There is plenty of success in the world for all of us. This is what has changed in my life because of this nameless documentary! You Can Do Quote
