There was this book I read in graduate school called Six Thinking Hats. It is about the idea to have people intentionally wear different ‘hats’ to play out different helpful roles during important meetings, discussions, etc. I loved this concept – temporarily trying on a role or part for the sake of greater learning. What an awesome way to get a new perspective! It’s not you but you get to try it for a moment. While I love this multiple hats idea, I had no idea how much I would take it on in my real life.
A couple years ago, I made the decision start my own company. When I took the jump into entrepreneurship, I had no idea what was going to follow. I have always loved learning & new experiences but the amount of growth in my life recently has been intense, even for me.
It was the structure and stability of a corporate job to being a rookie business owner starting at zero overnight. In hindsight, the most challenging part for me was the shift in accountability. I had so much accountability in the corporate world: people knew where I was most of my day, I had a team to lead, job expectations to meet, etc. I was hit unexpectedly hard by the loss of that when I started working on my own. I now had to own every decision in every aspect of my life. All of my time, even my purpose – I had to find a reason to keep driving forward.
This freedom led to what I now refer to as the “Time of Many Hats.” As in, because I had little understanding of what it really means to run a business, I did a lot of research, tried everything I could, and pivoted as quickly as needed. I wore a LOT of different hats.
You know that quote by Thomas Edison about how he did not fail, he just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work? That is a pretty perfect summary of the last couple years of my life. Many hats, remember! Check out part of the list I put together:
Pretty crazy! Want to know one of the main lessons I learned? Sometimes, just picking one major lane at a time and staying in it is the best – especially when that lane is the direction your heart draws you. Go figure. For some reason, I was very thick headed on that lesson. Ha.
I’m two years into owning a business and I feel like I am just starting now. Welcome. 🙂
